As the Marin Housing Authority Executive Director, everyday my staff and I are working to create a better place and more opportunities for our residents and the community at large. But since the senseless and brutal murder of George Floyd, I have been trying to emerge from my state of shock and reflect on what can we do, what can I do to help. As I did this, I was reminded of the stages of grief we are all expected to go through. Those stages being: Shock and denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance It is not the same for all people and it is also not clear as to when a person goes into each stage and how long the time in that stage will last. But based on the pain that I feel and the pain I see others are feeling and expressing, I want to replace that final stage of grief called Acceptance, with a new hope filled stage called Change. A Change that requires us to all stand up against racial and social injustice. A Change that enables us to feel the pain and suffering of our fellow human being, especially across our differences and divides. A Change to use our personal power, privilege and platform to call out inequality always. Please know that we are intentional in that we want our practices, policies and interactions with you, our partners, to bring on long overdue change in our society.
